About Finca El Socorro

Finca El Socorro, located in Palencia — about 50 kilometers from Guatemala City — has a long and distinguished history. Originally part of Hacienda San Guayaba in 1905, it was inherited and sold multiple times until 1968, when Dr. Mario de la Cerda and his wife Maria Colom de la Cerda brought it back into the family.

In 1980, their son Juan de la Cerda Colom began planting coffee, establishing the foundation for today’s farm. Now, Juan Diego la Cerda, the fourth generation of family ownership, manages the farm alongside his father, producing some of Guatemala’s most acclaimed coffees. The farm’s dedication to quality is evident in its Cup of Excellence achievements: 1st place in 2007 and 2020, 2nd place in 2021.

Finca El Socorro is known for its ecological wet mill, which depulps cherries dry and recycles water safely back into the forest. Coffee cultivation occupies only 25% of the land; the rest is covered with natural forest, cows, and flower plantations. Shade-grown coffee thrives under the farm’s natural canopy, and each parcel is carefully documented, with signs noting age, variety, and size of the trees.

Flavour Profile

A bright Guatemalan coffee, combining fruit-forward sweetness with rich, layered depth.

  • Blackberry: Dark, jammy fruit character
  • Molasses: Deep, warming sweetness
  • Lime Peel: Subtle citrus brightness for balance

Processing Method

Finca El Socorro uses a washed process with meticulous quality control:

Selective Harvesting: Only fully ripe cherries are hand-picked to ensure optimal flavour.

  • Wet Milling: Coffee is depulped using an efficient, ecological wet mill, with water recycled and treated responsibly.
  • Fermentation & Drying: Beans are fermented and dried under controlled conditions to enhance clarity, sweetness, and body.
  • Sorting & Grading: After drying, beans are hand-sorted for uniformity and quality.

This method highlights the Maracaturra variety’s fruit-forward character while maintaining balance and sweetness.

Brewing Recommendations

Enjoy this coffee to showcase its layered sweetness and fruit complexity:

  • Espresso: Dense and syrupy, highlighting molasses richness and fruit depth.
  • Filter (Pour-Over/Drip): Clean, bright, and layered, with lime peel and honey notes.
  • French Press: Full-bodied and smooth, emphasising Black Forest fruit and molasses undertones.

Perfect for:

Coffee enthusiasts who appreciate award-winning Guatemalan washed coffees — fruit-forward, elegant, and sweet, with nuanced complexity from high-altitude Maracaturra.
