About Finca La Concepción
Finca La Concepción, formerly known as Finca La Esperanza, has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Around 1890, don Anacleto Marroquín, a first-generation coffee producer, purchased the original 250-hectare farm in the valley of Acatenango to take advantage of Guatemala’s booming coffee industry.
In 1910, his daughter Maria Natalia and her husband Maximiliano Perez inherited the farm and replanted coffee, transporting all production to the town of Acatenango using donkeys and mules to process it in local wet mills. By 1956, Maximiliano built the farm’s own wet mill and introduced Caturra as the main varietal. Finca La Esperanza earned national recognition in 1968 by winning 2nd prize for coffees grown above 4,000 ft.
The farm passed through generations, with Maria Natalia and Maximiliano’s daughters managing it until the early 2010s, when it was acquired by don Hector Leal. Today, Finca La Concepción encompasses 100 hectares and has been transformed under modern growing methods and varietals, including H1, H3, Casiopea, Gesha, Ethiopian Dwarf, and Pink Bourbon, producing an exquisite cup of coffee.
The farm is now managed by Maris Leal, granddaughter of don Hector Leal, together with her husband Daniel Skineer-Klee. Maris brings extensive expertise to the farm, including experience judging at ANACAFE (The Guatemalan Coffee Association). Their collaboration reflects a deep commitment to quality and sustainability, and they combine family life with a passion for coffee, raising three children while continuing the farm’s legacy.
Flavour Profile
A bright and festive Guatemalan coffee with sweet, spiced complexity and layered citrus notes.
Clementine: Juicy, vibrant citrus brightness.
Mulled Spice: Warm, aromatic spice with gentle depth.
Caramel: Soft, rich sweetness that rounds the cup.
Processing Method
Finca La Concepción uses a meticulous washed process to highlight clarity and sweetness:
- Selective Harvesting: Only ripe cherries are hand-picked to ensure peak flavour.
- Wet Mill Processing: Cherries are pulped and fermented under controlled conditions to develop clean, nuanced flavours.
- Drying: Beans are carefully dried to optimal moisture levels to preserve consistency and stability.
- Sorting: After drying, beans are graded and hand-sorted for uniformity and quality.
This approach produces a balanced cup with both sweetness and depth, reflecting the farm’s high-altitude terroir.
Brewing Recommendations
Bring out the coffee’s full sweetness and complexity with these methods:
- Espresso: Smooth, velvety shot with caramel and warm, aromatic spices.
- Filter (Pour-Over/Drip): Clean, layered, and sweet with juicy highlights.
