About Rwamatamu Coffee
Founded by husband-and-wife team Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laeticia in 2015, Rwamatamu is a family-owned coffee producer with a strong focus on community. Located in Mbare, western Rwanda, the farm combines traditional farming knowledge with careful processing techniques to produce exceptional coffee.
Beyond coffee production, the farm plays an active role in community development — providing employment, supporting women’s cooperatives, and investing in agricultural training programs that help farmers improve quality and productivity.
The Kirunga Lot 4 Extended Natural showcases the farm’s commitment to experimentation and careful processing, producing a coffee that highlights the elegance and clarity Rwanda is known for.
Flavour Profile
A refined and comforting Rwandan coffee, balancing gentle sweetness with clarity and structure — elegant yet deeply satisfying.
- Mango: Juicy, tropical sweetness
- Maple: Warm, mellow richness
- Fig: Soft, lingering fruit complexity
Processing Method
This lot uses a Natural process with extended fermentation, designed to enhance sweetness and fruit complexity while maintaining clarity.
- Selective Harvesting: Only fully ripe Red Bourbon cherries are hand-picked during the harvest season.
- Extended Fermentation: Cherries undergo a controlled extended fermentation period before drying, encouraging deeper fruit expression and complexity.
- Raised Bed Drying: Whole cherries are dried slowly on raised beds under the Rwandan sun, allowing the sugars in the fruit to influence the flavour of the beans.
- Milling & Sorting: Once fully dried, the coffee is carefully milled and sorted to ensure consistency and high quality.
This processing method produces a coffee with layered fruit sweetness, gentle warmth, and a clean, structured finish.
Brewing Recommendations
This coffee performs beautifully across multiple brewing styles:
- Espresso: Smooth and balanced, highlighting maple sweetness and rich fruit depth.
- Filter (Pour-Over / Drip): Clean and vibrant, bringing out mango brightness and delicate fruit notes.
- French Press: Full-bodied and rounded, emphasising fig sweetness and a warm, syrupy finish.
