About Zahra Bani Murra & Aqeeq Al Yemen
Zahra Bani Murra is a remote and high-altitude village located in East Haraz, one of Yemen’s most renowned coffee-growing regions. The area’s steep, terraced mountainsides and arid climate create ideal conditions for cultivating distinctive, dense coffee cherries.
Aqeeq Al Yemen, a dedicated coffee centre working directly with farmers in East Haraz, focuses on preserving Yemen’s ancient coffee heritage while introducing careful post-harvest practices to elevate quality. Through selective harvesting and improved drying infrastructure, they bring out the full character of the Jaadi variety — a traditional Yemeni heirloom known for its deep sweetness and spiced fruit notes.
The combination of altitude, limited rainfall, and traditional sun-drying methods results in a coffee that captures the essence of Yemen’s rich coffee legacy — complex, warming, and unmistakably unique.
Flavour Profile
A spiced and warming Yemeni coffee with rich fruit depth.
Baked Apple: Sweet and mellow, offering a comforting core of stewed fruit.
Cinnamon: Gentle spiced warmth that lingers on the palate.
Damson: Dark plum complexity adds depth and structure to the cup.
Processing Method
Aqeeq Al Yemen employs a traditional natural process refined for consistency and clarity:
- Selective Harvesting: Only fully ripe cherries are hand-picked to ensure optimal sweetness.
- Sun Drying: Cherries are laid on raised beds and dried naturally for approximately 19 days, allowing even airflow and gradual moisture reduction.
- Careful Monitoring: The coffee is turned frequently and covered during the hottest hours to preserve delicate aromatics.
This careful, slow drying enhances the coffee’s syrupy body and layered fruit complexity.
Brewing Recommendations
To bring out the spiced fruit and gentle sweetness of this Yemeni Jaadi:
- Espresso: Rich and syrupy, with baked apple sweetness and warming spice.
- Filter (Pour-Over/Drip): Clean and expressive, highlighting damson fruit and cinnamon notes.
- French Press: Full-bodied and rounded, emphasizing the depth of Yemen’s natural process character.
